About Pluto Falls

One of the many unnamed waterfalls in Styx Valley, Pluto Falls is a two-tiered waterfall on an unnamed tributary to Gee Creek that drains Pluto Bluff, hence the name Pluto Falls being given to it. It consists of 7-8 meter lower plunge over an overhanging cliff, with the unique feature of being able to walk behind the falls, and a cascading 5 metre upper tier only about 50 metres upstream. Like most of the Styx's waterfalls, Pluto Falls has no track and requires a steep, off track walk.

To find Pluto Falls, turn onto Waterfall Creek Road from Styx Road, 36km from the Karanja end or 17km from the Maydena end. Head 1km up this unsealed, but generally good road, then take a left at a Y-fork and continue for another kilometre, parking at a large bend in the road where an overgrown logging road heads in on the left. Now on foot, follow this old logging road for about 200 metres, then at the closest point to Pluto Falls dive down into the gully below. A good landmark to look out for at the point to leave the old road is a giant Eucalyptus Regnans - the trees that Styx Valley is famous for. The descent to the falls is only another 200 metres in horizontal distance, but it is steep going and the first section through logged regrowth is a bit nasty with numerous fallen trees.

Pluto Falls, while not a large waterfall and likely slowing to a trickle in summer, are nonetheless an interesting spot to find and photograph, particularly with the bonus of being able to get behind them. A scramble to the top and a short mission up the log-choked creekbed will bring you to the less vertical, but potentially broader (in high flow) upper falls. Only about an hour is needed to explore both waterfalls, plus time for photos.
