About Plateau Falls

On the western side of Dove Lake, a prominent waterfall cascades over 200 metres from the Cradle Plateau into the lake, with no official name but unoffically known as Plateau Falls after the name of its creek. After rain, the falls are a spectacular sight with a fanning main tier that funnels into a narrow chute as it cascades into the glacially-carved lake basin. The falls retain some flow for much of the year though may not catch the eye unless there has been recent rain, particularly given the accessible views of the falls are all fairly distant. The clearest view of the entire waterfall is from the Hansons Peak area on the far side of Dove Lake, though closer views are also possible from the Dove Lake Circuit. The walk times and distances on this page are those of the Dove Lake Circuit, given it is the easiest and most obvious hike in the area from which the falls are viewable. Hansons Peak is a challenging but rewarding grade 4 walk with a steep climb to its summit.
