About Lower Julia Falls

A short distance below the impressive Julia Falls is Lower Julia Falls, a smaller but still impressively powerful 10 metre plunging waterfall. Despite being no more than 100 metres below the upper falls, the terrain on either side of the creek adjacent to the lower falls is far too dangerous to attempt to navigate, so access is only possible from downstream, while the upper falls can only be accessed from above.

To reach Lower Julia Falls, turn right onto Gee Creek Road from Styx Road, a few kilometres past the Big Trees Walk coming from Maydena. Drive as far as you can along this road, before accessed is blocked by a locked boom gate. In a 2WD, you may want to park a little further back, as the final section of the road becomes quite rough and muddy. Walk along the final park of Gee Creek Road past the gate, until you come to an old quarry. At the back of this quarry there is a very overgrown old road, visible on the Listmap hillshade layer. While it is by no means easy going, bushbashing along this road is probably the best route towards the falls, travelling parralel to Gee Creek before terminating near the tributary creek leading to the falls. Once you hit the trib creek, you are in Southwest National Park, and only about 500 metres from the falls. It is a very hard 500 metre hike up the creek, however, frequently log choked with steep, unstable banks. Lower Julia Falls are very satisfying to reach, but the difficulty of the hike is not to be underestimated, even in the context of the Styx where most waterfalls are accessed by off-track bushbashes.
