About Isabella Falls

Upstream of Reuben Falls in the Weld Valley is its far lesser visited, yet no less impressive sister Isabella Falls. The falls plunge over a wide single drop of 25 metres and in winter are a powerful sight standing beneath the mighty wall of water. There is a reason it is so little known, however. Besides being unnamed on maps, Isabella Falls has no track going anywhere near it, and requires a serious off track mission to reach.

There is no single route that should be taken to Isabella Falls, but the best starting point is from an unnamed spur road off South Weld Road. Turn left about 2km before the Reuben Falls carpark, and drive until you find a spot that looks attractive to head off into the bush around the nearest point to the falls as the crow flies. From here, it is just a matter of using off track navigation and negotiating through some incredibly thick rainforest, as well as sections of cutting grass and some steep and slippery gullies. Along the way you cross Crystal Creek, and it's worth seeking out Crystal Falls to maximise return on investment for a trip that is extremely rewarding, but one of the toughest off track waterfall hikes around.
