About Wallaby Falls

Wallaby Creek in Lonnavale is home to a nice 12 metre waterfall, unnoficially known as Wallaby Falls. The falls plunge over an overhanging cliff, and are a short off track hike from Barnback Road. While the walk is only 400 metres each way, it is steep in parts and travels through forest burnt in the 2019 fires, meaning there are numerous fallen trees and potentially unstable ground to navigate.

To find Wallaby Falls, take Denison Road from Lonnavale, then turn left onto Barnback Road. There is a gate at the start of this road, though in November 2022 this was found to be open. Continue along Barnback Road for roughly 3km, then back on the shoulder at the point of the road closest to the waterfall. There is no right or wrong way to approach the falls, so just choose the path of least resistance through the regrowth, with animal trails often providing the best route forward. As you approach the falls, be sure to take a wide route into the base, following a ridgeline down to creek level. Cliffs lined with thick regrowth continue about 100 metres from the east of the falls, and aiming too high will leave you scrapping around in this area.

Being a small creek with a drainage of just over 100 hectares, Wallaby Falls is best visited in the winter and spring months, but if flowing well is a really nice spot to explore for those accustomed to off track hiking.
