About Dixon Falls

Downstream of Redwater Falls is a blue line indicating a waterfall not named on maps. Closer inspection of aerial imagery and Lidar data shows this anonymous blue line is actually a very significant 40 metre single drop falls into a large pool, and after our visit we were informed the falls had unoficially been named Dixon Falls, after photographer Grant Dixon who was part of possibly the first ever group to reach the falls in 2020.

Like Redwater Falls, Dixon Falls is an incredibly remote and hard-to-reach waterfall requiring a walk of at least 3 days return entirely off track. The Redwater Falls page contains detailed trip notes for the majority of the hike, though the short stretch from Redwater Falls to Dixon Falls is comfortably the most technical and difficult section of the entire hike. From Redwater Falls, push through some horizontal scrub and climb above creek level on its western bank, working downstream until roughly due north of Dixon Falls. At this point a line of cliffs extends from the falls forming a cirque. Extreme care must be taken to find a small gap in these cliffs which provides a route towards the base of the falls. The descent from here is then 150 metres vertically over a horizontal distance of just 150 metres meaning essentially you are descending a 45 degree slope on soft, unstable ground. If you're able to make it down though, the falls are one of the most spectacular true wilderness waterfalls in Tasmania, and on a sunny afternoon you might be lucky enough to spot a rainbow in the falls' mist.
