About Edwards Falls

Edwards Falls is a small, unofficially named waterfall not far from the Tahune Airwalk in Southern Tasmania. The falls drop 6-8 metres over a rounded cliff and are quite a pretty sight, though the area around the falls was badly affected by the 2019 fires so it is easy to imagine them being far more picturesque before the surrounding rainforest was largely torched. No track leads to the falls, and access is extremely steep and difficult especially after the fires dumped fallen trees everywhere and made the ground very unstable. A mission to Edwards Falls should only be attempted by very experienced bushwalkers.

To find the falls, park at a large bend on Arve Road at the closest point to the falls (a GPS is a necessity). At this bend, an old road heads in a north-easterly direction towards the falls. Walk along this road for about 800 metres, then at a bend on the road turn left and descend a ridge towards the falls (leave the road at coordinates -43.09347, 146.75646). It is simply a matter of picking the route of least resistance down the steep slopes choked with fallen trees. The final section of the descent is the most challenging, descending the escarpment of the waterfall itself, and extreme care must be taken. The area around the base of the falls is bar far the nicest part of the walk with a small pocket of rainforest untouched by the fires, and Edwards Falls itself is a really pretty waterfall, though a large log fallen over the top makes it difficult to photograph. The creek that feeds Edwards Falls flows on is also relatively small so it is unlikely there would be much to see here in the drier months.
