About Eldon Falls

A relatively small waterfall cascading over several tiers no more than 7-8 metres high, Eldon Falls is nonetheless a nice spot that can be hiked to in a singular 2 hour return hike, or be combined with the more impressive Dora Falls for a 3-4 hour loop hike.

Finding the start of the walk can be difficult enough in itself if you don’t know where to look. Drive a few kilometres up Jacobsons Road from Judbury, before arriving at a small pullout on the side of the road at a sharp bend, just before the road starts to descend to Dora Creek after climbing steadily for a while up to this point. If you reach the creek crossing, you’ll know you’ve gone too far.

Walk about 50 metres up the road from the pullout until you come to an old 4WD track, which for some reason is not marked on maps. If only going to Eldon Falls, travel along this track as it heads eastwards, before leaving it to head into the bush as it turns towards the south. You soon should arrive at Dora Creek, which needs to be crossed, then follow the contours around into the next gully, which contains the unnamed Eldon Falls creek and the waterfall itself. It is highly recommended to carry a GPS to ensure you arrive in the right spot and avoid coming out too far above or below the falls.

Alternatively, if making a loop out of the hike, locate the Eldon Falls Creek at the base of Dora Falls, then travel upstream for about 900 metres until the falls are reached, which may take up to an hour as the terrain is difficult and the overgrowth thick at times. There are a couple of smaller cascades below the main falls, but be sure to continue up to the 7 metre high main plunge of the waterfall. Follow the contour lines around into the Dora Falls drainage on the way back, which will take you across Dora Creek and then up to the main track.
