About Stony Falls

Tucked away off Plenty Link is Stony Falls, an impressive two-tiered waterfall only recently discovered and named. The main (lower) tier of the falls drop 12 metres over a steep, sloping drop, while the upper falls just 50 metres upstream tumble over a slightly smaller, but no less impressive plunge.

The best way to access Stony Falls is via an unnamed spur road on the north side of the creek that takes you closest to the falls. It's clear from the road, but the descent towards creek level is incredibly steep, dropping 100 metres vertically in just over 200 metres of horizontal distance. Initially, the off-track hike goes through recently cleared forest, before reaching the edge of the coup at which point the descent becomes far steeper, bordering on rock climbing at times. From the north side of the creek it is only possible to reach the base of the lower falls, and a creek crossing is required to head towards the upper tier. Unfortunately the creek was flooded when we visited so the photo shown on this page is of the lower falls, with photos of the rest of the falls to wait for a subsequent return mission.

Extreme care and experience is required to attempt a trip into this rugged area.
