About Grey Mares Tail

A short distance from St Marys is a tall but seasonal waterfall known as Grey Mares Tail, likely a reference to the famous Scottish waterfall of the same name. The falls are easily accessed via a 15 minute return walk on a well constructed trail leading to a lookout platform across from the falls, which after rain are an impressive sight tumbling into the gorge forming St Marys Pass. The falls actually continue falling well below the visible portion from the lookout and it is possible to get glimpses of the lower tiers from the road, but closer access to these sections of the waterfall would be extremely difficult if not impossible.

To find Grey Mares Tail, take the Esk Main Road out of St Marys, then keep an eye out for a large pullout on the left just before the road descends into St Marys Pass. The falls are not clearly signed from the road so it is possible to drive be without knowing they are there, but the carpark is large and obvious on the left if coming from St Marys.
