About Twisted Falls (Parrawe)

One of the many waterfalls in the Parrawe area, Twisted Falls is a 25 metre falls in a steep rainforest setting that cascades towards Hellyer River. The falls are not officially named, and have no track accessing them. With a very steep descent required to reach their base, a visit should only be attempted by very experienced hikers.

To find Twisted Falls, take one of the many unsigned spur roads off the Murchison Highway between Hellyer Gorge and Waratah - GPS needed to find the right turnoff as there are numerous similar-looking roads around here. Travel about 1km down this road until it forks and heads away from the falls , and park here. The first part of the walk is straightforward, through open grassland and weaving between sparse trees, making a direct line towards the waterfall. This first section skirts the edge of Hellyer Gorge State Reserve and private Forico land, so be careful to avoid the private property. After about 500 metres begin descending, still going towards the waterfall, then head into the rainforest at the closest point to the falls. It's initially pleasant and easy walking through open rainforest, and you will cross several old roads often marked by ribbons - at various stages the ribbons seem to be leading towards the falls but the trails all eventually divert elsewhere.

Eventually, after a steady descent you will come to a large clearing where a major landslide has fallen towards the creek below the falls, creating spectacular views of the Hellyer River Valley below and giving some indication of the steepness of the descent ahead of you. On our trip, we descended very steeply parralel to the landslide, then cut across a second smaller landslide and hit the base of the falls. A less steep route may be possible by heading to the top of the falls, crossing the creek and descending its northern side, but we have not yet explored this option.

While it is a mission only for very experienced hikers, Twisted Falls is a spectacular falls to seek out in winter and spring when the creeks are flowing well. Given its relatively small drainage, however, it is likely to trickle or run totally dry during summer, so time a visit after rain to make the most of the considerable effort required.
