About Millhouse Falls

Millhouse Falls is the unofficial name of a waterfall located next to Huon Road in Neika, near Hobart.  Millhouse Falls slides down the slopes of Livert Rivulet into an old water race, and can easily be seen from Huon Road.

History

Millhouse Falls was ‘discovered’ by surveyor Richard Hall in 1858 during his work to find the best route for the proposed “Direct Huon Road”. His final map showed the intended roadline crossing Levert Rivulet next to “fixed ironstone” – his description of the prominent dolerite slabs that Millhouse Falls descend.

Following completion of that section the new coach road, the blocks of newly-accessed Crown land near the road were auctioned off by the Government to pay for the expensive new road. The heavily timbered 80-acre block around the falls was purchased by Richard Millhouse in 1866 for £96.

Millhouse had a factory in Hobart where he manufactured wooden packing-cases, each of which held 60 one-pound tins of Tasmanian jams for export. Within a year of acquiring his land on the new Huon Road, Millhouse had built a small sawmill just above the road, and powered by a water-turbine, supplied from a pipe that descended steeply alongside the waterfall.

they feature in a number of historic photographs. The sawmill stopped operation by around 1880, but the falls are still surrounded by forest, and have continued to attract the attention of travellers for more than a century.
