About Apsley Falls

At the head of Apsley Gorge is a small waterfall dropping over a wide rock ledge into a beautiful green pool, unofficially known as Apsley Falls. The falls are more known as a swimming spot than major waterfall, but are nontheless a worthwhile attraction to seek out. Interestingly, the falls are almost a reverse seasonal falls, where in high flows the pool can rise to almost swallow the entire waterfall, while in low flow the full cliff is exposed and the 4-5 metre drop of the waterfall can be seen.

To reach Apsley Gorge and its falls, follow signs to Douglas Apsley National Park just north of Bicheno, then take the trail to the Apsley Waterhole. From the waterhole, the trail heads uphill, gaining about 150 metres in elevation, before descending to river level just above the falls. If flows are not too high, it is possible to follow the river downstream and back to the waterhole, passing a number of beautiful pools and cascades. If taking the return track the hike is 5.6km and 1.5-2 hours return, or if following the river down the gorge to form a loop the hike extends to 7km and at least 3 hours should be allowed (and it is classed as a grade 4, rather than grade 3 hike).
