About Upper Tumbledown Falls

Upstream of Tumbledown Falls in the Bluff River drainage is an unnamed waterfall marked by a blue line on topo maps and Listmaps, unofficially known as Upper Tumbledown Falls. The falls cascade about 10 metres down a rounded cliff into a small, tannin stained pool and are a nice reward for the significant effort required to reach them.

To find Upper Tumbledown Falls, take the Lake Will Track off the Overland Track, continuing around the lake to Innes Falls on a muddy trail. Leave the track and cross the Bluff River above Innes Falls, then follow along the top of the escarpment until you reach the small creek containing the falls. It is a steep and nasty descent on either side of the creek to the base of Upper Tumbledown Falls with some very loose ground requiring extreme care. Upper Tumbledown Falls can be combined with Innes, Veil, Cave, Tumbledown and Tomahawk Falls to make a long but rewarding day of off track waterfall hunting from the Overland Track.

Our visit to the falls was during April when creeks were flowing at moderate levels, and the somewhat lacklustre flow at the falls shows that they ideally need to be seen after good rain given their very small drainage.
