About Hartnett Rivulet Falls

Waterfall Valley is a gorgeous, waterfall-filled valley that can be accessed relatively easily via a detour from the Overland Track. The valley contains at least 5-6 notable waterfalls, culminating in a 50 metre cascading drop on Hartnett Rivulet that marks the end of the plateau. There are no official trails in the valley, however some unnoficial pads have developed and the walking is primarily through open buttongrass plains anyway. A 3-4 hour detour on the second day of the OLT to Hartnett Rivulet Falls via all the cascades and falls in the valley is highly recommended.

From the Waterfall Valley Hut along the Overland Track, follow the Overland Track for about 600 metres until you come to a small clearing just before the crossing of Hartnett Rivulet above Branigan Falls. A fairly well used pad heads down the northern side of the creek towards the base of Branigan Falls, skirting the edge of a buttongrass plain on the left and rainforest on the right. Just before the trail leads into the forest towards the base of Branigan Falls, turn left into the buttongrass and you should pick up a faint trail that leads you down to Lower Branigan Falls and Glory Falls deeper in the valley. Follow this trail until the convergence of Hartnett Rivulet with its northern and southern forks, then continue along a flat shelf of rock downstream, passing Branigan Cascades soon after. This rock shelf makes for fairly easy walking, with faint traces of a trail at points and some muddy puddles and pools at others. About 500 metres downstream of Branigan Cascades you will come to a cliff edge where it is possible to look down and get a profile view of Hartnett Rivulet Falls. This is a good turnaround point but continuing a little further, scrambling in and out of a gully and around to a second rocky outcrop gives the most complete and frontal view of the falls possible.

Hartnett Rivulet Falls are very impressive especially after some rain, though the view is a bit distant and closer access would be very difficult if not impossible. Being a west facing waterfall it is best seen in afternoon light.
