About Coal Falls

Situated near the southern plateau of Ben Lomond the aptly named Coal Falls drops over coal deposits on Storys Creek. When facing the waterfall a man made mining tunnel is clearly viewable on the right hand side, a clear indiciation of the mining history of the Rossarden / Storys Creek region.

About the Hike

Getting to Coal Falls requires uphill hiking, and commences from the Stacks Bluff track at Storys Creek. Possibly the easiest way to get to Coal Falls is to climb along the Stacks Bluff track all the way to the plateau. The walk provides expansive views around the Fingal Valley and gives you a glimpse of Tranquil Tarn just before you reach the plateau of the mountain. You can also add climbing to the summit of Stacks Bluff to this hike if you're a fast uphill hiker.

The first hour of your hike winds through the forest, steadily uphill. Once you pass the tree line you will be required to walk along big boulders, climbing as you go. The hike is arduous but the track is well marked all the way to the plateau. Once you finally reach the plateau, walking becomes easier and much flatter. There is no track to follow at all, and you will need to walk east for about 2kms until you reach Storys Creek. Once at Storys Creek, you will be required to walk down hill along the creek bed. The first waterfall you will see is a small waterfall that drops into a rocky amphitheatre.

Continue walking down the creek bed for another 200 metres (dropping 100 metres in elevation) to reach Coal Falls, and about 40 metres further downstream is yet another little waterfall that also flows over blackened coal deposits into a shallow pool.

At this point, you can either return the way you came by climbing back to the plateau, or continue downhill along the creek for about 1.5 - 2kms before leaving the creek and working your way through the dry forest back towards the carpark. There is no track to follow, but there are pink ribbons that, if found, will guide you back safely.
