About Twisted Falls

While Nelson Falls is the only falls accessed by a track, the Nelson River is actually home to three significant waterfalls, with unofficially-named Twisted Falls the farthest upstream of the three at the head of the deep gorge carved out by the river and containing its waterfalls. Twisted Falls is a very different falls in appearance to Sunshine and Nelson Falls downstream, cascading over a twisting, stair-stepping drop of about 50 metres in total.

To reach Twisted Falls, climb past Sunshine Falls on its western side, a steep and very challenging scramble requiring extreme care. Once at the top, pick a route upstream along the often steep, log choked banks of the river. On our visit, we stayed on the western side which proved a mistake and led to us climbing way above the river to avoid a cliff only to find no safe way forward. The photo on this page was taken from the best vantage point we were able to get from a very precarious outcrop which was a reasonably satisfying view of most of the waterfall, though not as good as getting up close of course. Access to the base may be possible by following the eastern bank of the river however as yet we have not explored that option. The hike upstream from Sunshine Falls is similar in distance to the Nelson-Sunshine leg of the hike, though significantly more difficult and only suitable for very experienced off track hikers.
