Cashs Falls is located in Cashs Gorge south east of Ringarooma, and west of Pyengana on New River. The river flows through a very steep gorge making access to the waterfall incredibly difficult. There are no tracks or paths that lead you to Cashs Falls, and any attempt to reach the waterfall will require experience in off track walking in Tasmania, as well as many hours of time. Despite the close proximity to Ralphs Falls, this is a reasonably hard long hike.
Cashs Falls is an elusive waterfall that is incredibly difficult to reach due to the very thick horizontal forest that grows along the very steep hills and cliffs of the Gorge. Previous attempts to reach Cashs Falls resulted in failure due to the incredibly difficult terrain to work through. After several attempts, the GPS track provided was the route that successfully reached the waterfall, and required walking carefully down the banks of another creek down very steep slopes. Cashs Falls is almost impossible to view due to the very thick trees that cover the front of the waterfall.
The hike commenced from the parking area for Cashs Gorge and Ralph Falls. Walking half way around the circuit, we exited the track and descended down into the gorge from the northern end of the track. The forest is incredibly thick in places, and surprisingly, there was a quite a bit of 'horizontal' forest, where trees were growing sideways. With no clear path to work with, the hike to New River was a real bush bash and time consuming. On your way down to the base of the gorge you will also encounter lots of loose scree, covered in moss. New River contains lots of small cascades and small waterfalls, encased in immense thick forest. Reaching Cashs Falls took about 3 hours.
Cashs Falls is quite large, with at least 2 tiers. Viewing the waterfall was difficult due to the amount of trees and ferns blocking it's view. There was no room to sit and rest either due to the steepness of the terrain. In many respects, the epic hike resulted in little reward. However, it is a powerful waterfall, and is impressive when large flow of water is running through the river. In drier times, it would be possible to stand in the middle of the river and photograph the waterfall.
All in all, The walk to Cashs Falls was extremely difficult and tiring, yet the forest is beautiful. There are many cascades and small waterfalls that can be seen along the banks of New River, but they are difficult to reach. This hike is not for the faint hearted, and we recommend only people with lots of experience in traversing steep slopes attempt to reach this waterfall.
