About Lower Branigan Falls

A short distance downstream from Branigan Falls in Cradle Mountain's Waterfall Valley is an impressive waterfall unnoficially known as Lower Branigan Falls. The falls drop 10-15 metres with an unusual forked shape, and their location in an open buttongrass plain gives them a very different character to their upstream counterpart.

To reach Lower Branigan Falls, hike along the Overland Track for about 600 metres past Waterfall Valley Hut to a small clearing just before the crossing of Hartnett Rivulet above Branigan Falls. A fairly well used (but unsigned) pad heads down the northern side of the creek towards the base of Branigan Falls, skirting the edge of a buttongrass plain on the left and rainforest on the right. Just before the trail leads into the forest towards the base of Branigan Falls, turn left into the buttongrass and you should pick up a faint trail. This trail leads to the edge of the escarpment where the top section of Lower Branigan Falls comes into view on the right, then steeply descends to the creek. A short bushbash through a bit of scrub takes you right to the base of the impressive falls where its lower tier becomes apparent.

It is worth continuing your exploration further into Waterfall Valley, downstream to Branigan Cascades and Hartnett Rivulet Falls, as well as up the north fork of Hartnett Rivulet which contains Glory Falls a little further north on the same cliff line as Lower Branigan Falls. Allow 3-4 hours to fully explore Waterfall Valley, a very worthwhile detour on the second day of the OLT.
